Luck Is Built, Not Found
"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." It is also referred to as Serendipity.
Most people spend their lives waiting for luck.
They do bets, pray for miracles, envy successful people, and wonder why fortune seems to smile on everyone and elude them. They speak of luck as though it were a mysterious force that randomly selects a few fortunate individuals while ignoring the rest.
But what if luck is not random?
What if much of what we call luck is actually the predictable outcome of how we choose to live?
I recently listened to a popular South African Comedian called Trevor Noah who explained succinctly the four different kinds of luck. His explanation challenged the traditional belief that luck is purely accidental. More importantly, it reminded me that while some forms of luck are outside our control, others can be deliberately created.
1. Dumb Luck: The Luck You Never Chose such as the luck of birth.
You did not choose your parents.
You did not choose your country.
You did not choose your natural talents, your height, your voice, or your intelligence.
Some people are born into wealth, while others are born into poverty.
Some inherit businesses while others inherit struggles.
This type of luck is real, but it is also the only type over which we have absolutely no control. Complaining about it changes nothing.
2. Luck of Motion: The Luck That Rewards Action
This is my favorite. Motion creates opportunities that standing still never will.
The entrepreneur who launches ten business ideas is more likely to succeed in one than the person who never starts.
The student who applies for twenty scholarships has a greater chance of receiving one than the student who applies for none.
The farmer who plants many fields has more chances of harvesting than the one who waits for perfect weather.
Every action increases the number of opportunities available to you. People often describe successful individuals as "lucky." What they rarely see are the thousands of emails sent, the endless nights of study, the countless failures, the rejected proposals, and the years of persistence.
The truth is simple:
"The harder you work, the luckier you get."
Hard work does not guarantee immediate success.
3. Luck of Awareness: Seeing Opportunity That Others Ignore
Sometimes opportunity arrives disguised as inconvenience.
A problem becomes a business.
A rejection becomes a new direction.
A failure becomes valuable experience.
Two people may experience exactly the same event. One sees disaster and the other sees opportunity. That difference is awareness.
Many fortunes have been built simply because someone recognized value where everyone else saw nothing. The world constantly presents opportunities. The question is whether your mind has been trained to recognize them.
Do you see the cup as Half Full or Half Empty?
Awareness transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary breakthroughs.
4. Luck of Specialization: Becoming So Good at doing something that Luck always finds You
The fourth type of luck comes through mastery. When you dedicate years to one craft, one industry, or one mission, something remarkable begins to happen.
People start recommending you.
Opportunities begin looking for you.
Your reputation travels farther than your marketing.
Experts often appear "lucky." In reality, they have invested thousands of hours refining their abilities until excellence became their identity.
The case of the Greatest Footballer of all times called Leonel Messi. He's won every international team and individual trouphy to the extend that Many people assume he's being favored by the system whereas it's not the case.
Focus is powerful.
Repetition creates mastery.
Mastery attracts opportunity.
The more specialized you become, the more unique your value and unique value is difficult to ignore.
Stop Waiting for Luck. Many people spend their lives waiting for fortune to knock on their door. History suggests a better strategy.
Build skills, Take action, Pay attention, Keep improving and Eventually, people will call you lucky. They will never see the years you spent preparing for the opportunity that finally arrived.
Life will always contain elements we cannot control. We cannot choose where we begin, but we can choose whether we remain still or move. We can choose whether we notice opportunities or ignore them. We can choose whether we become average or exceptional.
Of the four kinds of luck, the one available to every human being is "The Luck of Motion".
Every phone call you make, Every book you read, Every skill you learn, Every problem you solve, and Every person you help increases the probability that opportunity will eventually meet preparation.
So stop asking whether you are lucky. Ask yourself whether you are moving. Because in the end,
"The harder you work, the luckier you get."
